Begin to Take Action in the Direction of Your Intention - Commitment

In the last article, I wrote about the first step in taking action toward the direction of your intention. Once you have cleared any barriers to this action, the second part is beginning to take the actions needed. Sometimes this has to do with commitment. I've been thinking about commitment and it seems to be that what commitment really is, is when you decide to totally align your whole being with really bringing your intention into existence.

Of course there are those times when the Universe is taking care of everything. Haven't you had experiences of having a desire and then forgetting about it and at some point, what you had envisioned just shows up without you having to do anything? I think everyone has had some experiences like that. This kind of thing can happen when you make a commitment to something.

Now, we continue with Step Three

 

Here is Goethe's famous quote (one of my favorites) on commitment:

Concerning acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth.

All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.

A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamt would have come his way.

Whatever you can do, or dream, you can begin it.

Sometimes it seems like we do need to be involved but if we have done a good job of absenting the Core Dynamics from our life, we don't have to force anything and even though we are taking action, it feels like we are continuously in the Zone. When this is happening not only we are not trying to force anything but it can even feel like we are hardly doing anything. It's effortless. What is actually happening is that we are having a clear experience of the laws of nature acting through us. This is the ideal way in which to take actions in the direction of the fulfillment of your intentions.

We sometimes tend to get into the notion that it is we who are taking the action. However controversial it might seem, I would assert that it is the laws of nature who act through us and not actually us who is taking the action. It's a matter of where we are standing. If we are standing in a place that is defined by our ego, the false sense of who we are, then it seems like "I" am taking action. If we are standing in a place where we experience the action taking place with a kind of witnessing of the action, then we are in an experience of our true essential nature which is Pure Awareness.

In order to cultivate the experience of Pure Awareness so that it is more familiar to you and so that you can more easily access it, there is a simple exercise that you can do that shifts your attention from being absorbed in thoughts to noticing the gaps between the thoughts. As you do this your awareness of awareness itself tends to become much more lively in your experience. Sometimes the thing that is sabotaging us from taking the actions that we need to take to manifest our intentions is that we have two or more voices inside of us vying for control. If, for example, you have the intention to be slim and sexy but you find yourself eating too much or having too many high carbohydrate foods (think sugar), then often times one of the internal voices is that of a rebellious or resigned inner child who is really just wanting to assert itself and get a sense of itself from its willfulness. Anytime you have a self-sabotaging habit, this is probably what's going on inside of you. You may have been trying to figure out how to solve this problem for a long time and it just doesn't seem to work.

This is because the solution isn't to be found on the level of the intellect. The problem lies on the level of feeling, the feeling that if I assert myself then I will matter or I will be in control. This need for recognition strangely enough is no longer directed at our parents but rather at our own inner knowing of what would be best for us to do to accomplish our desires.

The exercise of Experiencing Pure Awareness in the Gap Between Thoughts is a great way to do an "end run" around this problem. This is because the experience of Pure Awareness gives the inner controlling child's voice the direct experience of what it ultimately wants which is to have a feeling of safety, a sense of inner stability in who and what we really are. Both the child and the mature voices inside of you find the essential nature of themselves in the experience of Pure Awareness and the whole fight over who's going to get their way simply disappears.

If you find that you are getting stuck and not able to pull the plug on the negative thoughts, you can do one or more of the following:

  • Practice the GAP exercise on a regular basis to cultivate familiarity with Pure Awareness as well as to help identify any underlying conditioned responses that may be energizing negative thinking.
